Rose Wylie

2.5.-4.10.2015

Presented by Morten Viskum

Galleri Star’s exhibition of works by Rose Wylie demonstrated the spontaneity and naivism that typify her art.

British Rose Wylie (b. 1934) came late to success. Although she acquired a good art education, she has come to be seen as a fugitive from the strict regimes of art history and art academies. In her attempt to achieve a spontaneous expression, she paints as would an artist who lacked a conventional art eduction: on canvases that are spread out on the floor or stapled straight on the wall, without primer or stretcher.

Nevertheless, Wylie’s works are infused with references to the painting masters of art history. In the exhibition, her conceptual acrobatics were clearly in evidence in both large paintings, smaller prints, and collages – formats and media that seem to inhabit equally important parts of her fascinating universe.
