KUBATANA – an exhibition with contemporary African artists

Curated by Kristin Hjellegjerde
Main Building

Kubatana is one of the largest presentations of contemporary African art yet seen in Scandinavia, bringing together 33 artists from 18 countries. The exhibition is curated by the London-based, Norwegian gallery owner, Kristin Hjellegjerde, and among the artists on show are Aboudia (1983, Ivory Coast), Gonçalo Mabunda (1975, Mozambique) and Serge Attukwei Clottey (1985, Ghana), whose massive installation will be mounted on the façade of Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium.

Frits Thaulow: From Evening in Oudenaarde to Summer Evening in Hokksund
Galleri Star

In Galleri Star we are this season exhibiting selected works by Frits Thaulow (1847–1906), one of Norway’s foremost landscape painters of the nineteenth century. The exhibition presents naturalistic landscape paintings, all executed in Thaulow’s French-inspired moderate realism with a strong focus on colouration and lighting effects. The selected works depict motifs such as the Aker River in Oslo, winter landscapes in Norway, rural French idylls, as well as one motif with a local connection, the 1891 painting Sommeraften i Hokksund (Summer Evening in Hokksund). Frits Thaulow was among the first Norwegians to shine in the international artistic firmament, and is still today one of our most well-known artists.

Christer Glein – Natura morta
Exhibition Hall

With his complex visual language and advanced sense of form, Christer Glein (b. 1984) made an early impression on Norwegian art. The artist belongs to a new generation of Norwegian figurative painters, and relates to painting with a heightened interest for the medium’s narrative properties and the balance between these and formal challenges. In Natura morta he is showing large-scale works painted in 2018–19, with motifs borrowed from art history, including figures by Picasso and the Norwegian artists Bjarne Melgaard and Sverre Bjertnes.

Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (VKL) is a centre for contemporary art located in the old Vestfos Cellulosefabrik in Øvre Eiker, Buskerud. The centre was founded by artist Morten Viskum in 2003 and has a floor space of 2500 m2. VKL exhibits contemporary art of international quality. At present the annual exhibition programme is confined to the summer season, May to September. The Main Hall houses the season’s primary exhibition across four floors. Two unconnected exhibitions are shown at Galleri Star and in the Exhibition Hall, which are in the new part of the building that opened in 2013. Here there is also a teaching room, conference room and office.
